In a part of this video, Dr. Shakibazadeh says: People who have limited health literacy apply less prevention, get sick more, and as a result, they are hospitalized more often, and also because they are usually amongst the older population, they need more check-ups and doctors appointments. A study in the United States found that, low health literacy can cost the government two hundred and thirty-eight billion dollars a year because a person with low health literacy usually seeks medical care at a later stage of their illness, and as a result, they would require ambulatory services and must go through Emergency services and then might get hospitalized in intensive care units and receive specialized services – all of which are extremely expensive.
