National meeting “Equity in Iran’s Health System”

Equity is a concept integrated  within human nature and one of the principles of Islam and emphasized by the leaders of our religion. A look at the achievements of the past four decades of our Revolution shows that one of the main concerns of the Islamic Republic of Iran has been establishing equity in various areas of our citizens’ lives, in a way that the both concepts of “justice and equality” are mentioned and emphasized in all the up-stream documents and legislation, including our constitution and the five-year economic development plans. Further, the health system, as the main institution responsible for ensuring the health of the population, by formulating and implementing various plans at national and regional levels has always sought to establish equity in access to and utilization of healthcare services.

Even though the efforts of the Ministry of Health and Medical Education as the main provider of healthcare services during the years after the Revolution have been significant, evidence shows that we still have a long way to go. For this purpose, the Health Equity Research Center of Tehran University of Medical Sciences has designed and conducted a national mega-project entitled “Assessing the current state of inequality in health, and investigating the roots and causes of health inequalities and presenting practical solutions to promote equity in health”. This study has resulted in publishing books, articles, policy briefs, and participation in promoting health Equity in our country. Therefore, this center intends to present the most important findings of this study by hosting a national scientific symposium attended by the national and academic officials of our health system.

This half-day scientific-specialized meeting will host Dr. Hossein Ghanaati, President of Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Dr. Amirhossein Takian, Research Deputy of Health Equity Research Center as Secretary of the meeting, Dr. Alireza Olyaeemanesh, Head of Health Equity Research Center and Chairman of the Panel, and Also, Dr. Behrooz Rahimi, Deputy Director of Development and Resource Management and Planning of the Ministry of Health and Medical Education, Dr. Kamal Heydari, Deputy Director of Health of the Ministry of Health and Medical Education, Dr. Ali Akbari Sari, Head of the National Health Research Institute, and Dr. Hossein Raghfar, economist and faculty member of Al-Zahra University (S), as speakers and will be held in person and virtually on Tuesday, July 12th, 2022 from 14:00 to 17:00 (IRst) at the Dar al-Fonun Hall. Also, at the end of this meeting, the book titled “Equity in the Health System of the Islamic Republic of Iran” will be unveiled.
