With the help of the World Health Organization in 2016, the Ministry of Health and Medical Education initiated a program to empower and improve performance and productivity of more than 700 public hospital managers. This was a response to a national survey (in 2015) to evaluate competency and educational needs of general hospital managers in Iran.

Facilitators arranged a curriculum with 7 sections including: governance, leadership and strategic management, human resources management, hospital budgeting, emergency room and crisis management, hospital equipment, supportive care, patient safety improvement, and health information management. This plan started by training 85 potential Iranian instructors –for a week– in Tehran in November of 2016. These instructors were academics skilled in English with a considerable practical background in healthcare management. The ministry also organized a workshop to improve the instructor’s skills in learning and teaching techniques.
